Sustainable Energy Days in Kamianske: municipal community actively contributes to improving energy efficiency

On September 19 – 23, 2016 the city of Kamianske, which is a member of the consortium led by Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, hosted a series of events within the framework of Sustainable Energy Days under the German Weeks in Ukraine. The celebrations were organised with the support of the project “Energy Efficiency in Municipalities” implemented on behalf of the German Government by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

During the week, the city residents took part in various information events on practical energy efficient measures, thematic workshops and raising awareness campaigns aimed at informing the wide public on the necessity of thrifty and rational use of energy and water resources, environmental protection and ways to reduce СО₂ emissions.

In his welcome speech at the official inauguration of Sustainable Energy Days, Mr. Oleksandr Chernyshov, Deputy Mayor in charge of humanitarian affairs, underlined that “improving energy efficiency in all sectors of the city life is a crucial requirement of today for municipal authorities”.

Most of the celebrations took place at the central square, where the city residents and visitors were engaged in the exhibition of energy saving products and technologies, flash mob “Save energy resources”, various thematic quizzes and competitions etc. The event was also highlighted with the Energy Efficiency Advisory Box led by the project consultant Mr. Dmytro Marusych, who provided consultations on energy saving measures. Later on in the evening, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to watch a movie on rational and thrifty use of energy sources and global climate change screened in the central park of culture and leisure.

Moreover, the organisers of Sustainable Energy Days conducted a seminar on implementing energy efficiency measures in multifamily apartment buildings. Given that the average heating cost in such buildings exceeds 60% of the total public utility payments amount, the recommended instruments for improving energy efficiency will provide an opportunity for the city residents to reduce operating costs of buildings and improve their living conditions.

The City Council of Kamianske is actively involving grant funds, investments and credit resources from various institutions in order to successfully implement energy efficiency projects in public sector. In particular, 141 municipal establishments have introduced the Informational Monitoring System under the project “Energy Efficiency in Municipalities”, meanwhile a number of energy efficiency projects in Kamianske are being implemented with the financial support provided by the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) and the E5P Fund.
