Energy efficient autumn in Myrhorod: residents are actively getting involved in energy conservation and sustainable development of the city
20.09.2016

Autumn is a traditionally generous season to harvest energy efficiency activities involving the project partner cities. In particular, on September 18 – 19, in the framework of German Weeks in Ukraine 2016 and in parallel with celebrating the City Day, Myrhorod hosted a series of information and training events for wide public dedicated to sustainable development and energy efficiency improvement.

The events were organised by Myrhorod City Council with the support of the project “Energy Efficiency in Municipalities” implemented on behalf of the German Government by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The German Weeks were inaugurated by Mr. Serhiy Solomakha, City Mayor, and Ms. Ima Khrenova-Shymkina, Deputy Project Director.

In order to stimulate the implementation of energy efficiency measures in residential and municipal sectors, three simultaneous training activities were organised: workshop entitled “HOAs as a driving force for the implementation of energy efficiency measures in residential sector”; seminar on energy efficiency measures in the municipal sector (energy monitoring of buildings and energy performance contracting) and the School for Energy Managers. Consultants of the project “Energy Efficiency in Municipalities” and FIATU experts were amongst the key speakers and trainers at the above mentioned events, which were attended by over 100 representatives of Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, Chernivtsi and Zhytomyr regions.

Apart from improving their knowledge and skills on implementing energy efficiency measures, the city residents had an opportunity to join the bike ride that was held simultaneously in Horishni Plavni (with parallel broadcasting via telebridge), parade of “creative” baby carriages and bike races for kids, organised with a view to promoting a healthy lifestyle. All participants received bike reflectors with the project logos.

Moreover, the Energy Efficiency Advisory Box led by the project consultant Mr. Dmytro Marusych arrived at the central city square. The expert presented energy efficiency improvement opportunities in residential buildings and shared useful energy saving tips encouraging people to reflect once again on the importance of energy conservation challenges. Furthermore, in order to draw attention to the necessity of thrifty use of energy and the formation of energy efficient thinking, within the celebrations the local community was presented a bike generator. Both adults and children expressed a vivid interest in the device and had an opportunity to try their strength in producing energy from the alternative sources in practice.
